Old Testament Historical Books (Credit: 2 or 3 hours)

This course is an interpretative survey of the historical books of the Old Testament. It includes the books of Joshua through Esther. It covers a period of about 1000 years from the entrance of the nation of Israel into the Promised Land until they returned after the Exile. The course examines the history of the nation of Israel with special emphasis upon its messianic mission in the world. This mission is first described in God’s covenant with Abraham, father of the Hebrew nation. The study will examine the background, structure, and contents of each book, with the specific purpose of gaining an understanding of the times and their relationship to God’s purpose to redeem the world through Jesus Christ.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, you should be able to: 1. Understand more fully the background, structure, contents, and major teachings in each of the historical books. 2. Have a historical and chronological concept of the broad sweep of Hebrew history from the Conquest to the return from Exile. 3. Have an understanding of the nature of biblical history with its special emphasis on God’s redemptive purpose and control over world affairs. 4. Identify and locate the key passages which explain the themes of each book and which have a bearing on Israel’s role in redemptive history. 5. Be able to relate events described in the historical books to the principles, promises, and directives in the Pentateuch. 6. Understand more effectively the times and conditions in which the Hebrew prophets addressed themselves to the nation and to the world.
